Starting gate from truss systems

Swatch Freeride World Tour

In 2013, a unique structure combining circular and straight truss was installed on the top of a Mackenzie Peak, Revelstoke, Canada. Just a few hours later, some of the world’s best freeride skiers started their BigSki race from this spectacular starting gate.

What was addressed?

The customer – Swatch Freeride World Tour - had a clear vision for the project – to create a distinctive starting gate that would showcase the event sponsors and provide strong visibility in TV footage.

The circular shape of the structure was also designed to reflect the iconic shape of watches produced by the event’s main sponsor, Swatch.

MILOS team

The project was led by MILOS Technical Director Vladimir Zeman together with Product Designer Martin Mlčoch. They worked closely with the customer to understand all project requirements and find solutions to the unique technical and logistical challenges.

What were the challenges?

Two main challenges had to be addressed from the very beginning.

Self-standing structure – The structure had to stand independently on the top of a mountain at an altitude of more than 2,000 m, with only a few guy wires providing additional stabilization after installation.

Transport – Due to the remote location, the entire structure had to be transported to the mountain peak fully assembled by helicopter.

The solution

To meet these challenges, the designers combined circular M290 HD Trio trusses to create a 5 m diameter ring. This was supported by an M290 HD Quatro structure, which also served as the ground support.

Together, these elements created a distinctive circular starting gate that provided both the required functionality and strong visual impact.

The entire structure was assembled in the valley and then transported to the mountain peak by helicopter, suspended from several lifting points. Once at the top, the crew only had to position the structure and secure it using the prepared guy wires.

Customer satisfaction

Everyone involved in the project appreciated the close cooperation with the MILOS team and the technical support provided throughout the process. The on-site crew described the final installation as smooth and well prepared.

Most importantly, the main sponsor, Swatch, was very satisfied with the strong brand visibility provided by the starting gate at the BigSki event.
